EL TRAJE DE MADERA

Me coloco el traje. El de los tirantes de madera. Escondido bajo el vestido de gala a través de mi ventana secreta, espero.
Siento el murmullo que envuelve la carcasa, noto como vibra el suelo al compás de las pisadas.
Parece que llega el momento.
Late.
Sensaciones conocidas las que recojo y el corazón se escapa.
Late. Más fuerte.
El trajín de voces que van y vienen, hay quien levanta mi falda, suena un tambor, o dos notas de gaita. Niños que entran. Madres que hablan. Extranjeros que buscan la foto. Chavales que cantan, abuelos que recuerdan…
Siento el blanco aporderarse al otro lado del velo, como otras veces. La multitud a la espera, el sol que aguarda, el adoquín que sostiene, la brisa que agrada, el vino que riega…
…El cohete que estalla!

OBSTINADA DEVOCIÓN

Los procesionistas procesionan procesionando. Llevan puestas las «txapelas» como platos; visten rigurosa camisa blanca y al cuello anudan pañuelos rojos. Cargan sobre sus hombros una radiante y pesada talla de la imagen del venerado Fermín. Han partido de la cuesta de Santo Domingo y se llegarán a la plaza de toros tras recorrer casi novecientos metros pasando por el Ayuntamiento, la calle de Los Mercaderes, la Estafeta, Telefónica… para pisar por fin, la arena.
Comenzaron el recorrido tras el chupinazo y ya no pararán de andar. A lo largo de ocho días irán quedando atrapados entre las callejuelas del casco antiguo. Una vez dentro de la plaza harán triunfal vuelta al ruedo, saludarán al respetable, descansarán del peso del Santo y se regresarán. El mismo camino desandarán al ritmo pegadizo de tambores y flautines. Entonarán el «Pobre de mí…» y otra vez vuelta a empezar. No quieren despedirse ni de San Fermín ni de las fiestas. Más bien… no pueden.
El 14 de Julio aún no encuentran la excusa propicia y siguen dando sus pasos por las mismas calles hasta que el próximo San Fermín, los sorprenderá procesionando como procesionan los procesionistas. Un poco cansados, eso sí, aunque con la obstinada devoción intacta.

Tras la celebración, Mike le pidió a su abuela que les volviera a relatar cómo se conocieron. Sus ojos se vidriaron y volaron a Pamplona, en 1942. Comenzó la historia, mientras embelesados, todos posamos nuestra vista en ella. – El destino le llevó a vuestro abuelo como fotógrafo a San Fermín, tras años ejerciendo como reportero de guerra. La noche del día 8, me invitó a bailar en la verbena del paseo Sarasate. Acepté un tanto cohibida debido a la presencia militar. Apenas nos entendíamos, pero su mirada gris me cautivó. Me acompañó a casa, y, aquella noche, estuve en vela observando aquella delicada flor con la que me agasajó. Quiso la fortuna, a la mañana siguiente, que lo encontrara fotografiando el encierro desde el vallado. Durante seis días degustamos un chocolate con churros en “La Mañueta”, fotografió a gigantes y cabezudos bailando por la cuesta del Labrit, vimos la inauguración de gaiteros y txistularis, películas al aire libre, el ambiente de las peñas…En el pobre de mí nos despedimos con la promesa de que volvería, y meses más tarde lo hizo. Y, hoy, seguimos celebrándolo.
Mike, días más tarde, cierra la maleta repleta de ropa blanca.
